Swunky: Swanky. Funky.
Lorraine's
is not "a club with some band playing in the corner".
We are a listening room for musicians and fans.
We created this room for both to have an intimate experience. You'll see a
great performance at Lorraine's
because we've gone to every length to see that our bands get what they need to
play their best and sound their best.
The room's feel comes from the music clubs
of past eras, combining classic decor with funky jazz club style.
The Story of Lorraine's
Lorraine’s name is taken from Memphis'
Lorraine Hotel, which was neighbor to the famous Stax Theatre (where many Stax
Records classics were cut by artists like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker
T & the MG’s, etc). The musicians would cut records for 14+ hours straight
- with no A/C - and they often looked for reprieve from the heat in the lobby
of the Lorraine Motel, which was air conditioned. The lobby of Lorraine's was
one of the only places in the south during the civil rights movement where
black & white musicians were coming together, in a very racially charged
environment, breaking barriers and creating music that made history and still
stands up today.
Lorraine's
is our tribute to those guys - our shared admiration for Memphis Soul Music and
the artists and ideals of the Stax records days….
